ENGIE Laborelec performs applied Research and Development (R&D) projects on the whole electricity chain-value, including the areas of generation, transmission, distribution, storage and final use, focusing on the energy transition and the 3D’s – decentralization, decarbonization and digitalization.

As per of our R&D activities, ENGIE Laborelec is looking for a recently graduated engineer or PhD to lead:

A technical assessment of the existing solutions for the conversion of retired electrical generators of old conventional generating units, to provide inertia / voltage control capabilities to grids. This technical assessment includes:

  • High-level comparison between retrofit projects of conventional units’ generators to synchronous condenser with a new project (“brown-field” vs “green-field” project);
  • Review of the different technical solutions proposed by suppliers;
  • Risk assessment of a retrofit.

A pre-feasibility study for a project of this kind in Chile. This pre-feasibility study typically includes:

  • Analysis and selection of different possible scenarios of decarbonization;
  • Basic market analysis (SWOT analysis, screening existing power plants, among others);
  • Sensitivity study.

Profile

The desirable candidate shall be a junior engineer/PhD with a Mechanical, Electrical or Industrial engineering degree. The candidate shall demonstrate strong technical competences in synchronous machines, and an interest in the power generation sector. Besides, it is desirable for the candidate to have a basic understanding of the operation of the Chilean national grid (Coordinador Electrico Nacional) and/or other similar electrical grids/markets. The candidate shall be fully proficient in English and Spanish. A cross-competence in business would be a plus.

The position is located in Providencia, Santiago de Chile, and would start during the first semester of 2021, with a duration of 6 months.

Deliverable: A research technical report, written in English.
